Taylor Swift Felt “Really Misunderstood” Before Releasing “Reputation”

Taylor Swift took home two awards at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards on Sunday, May 20, and thanked fans for being a part of her journey through thick and thin.

“When I started writing songs, back when I was 12, I did it as a way to feel more understood," Swift said while accepting the award for Top Selling Album. "And when I was writing Reputation, for a while there I felt really, really misunderstood by a lot of people. I just want to say to the fans, thank you for continuing to show up. The ways that you have cared about me, and the ways that you’ve treated me … thank you for making me feel understood again."

Swift, who is currently on tour with her epic Reputation stadium run, previously explained that the drama leading up to the release of Reputation has since become a symbol of defying bullying and that she incorporated snakes in her artwork and in her tour as a sign that bullying "can strengthen you.”

“I went through some really low times for a while because of it,” she previously said. “I went through some times when I didn’t know if I was gonna get to do this anymore."

The “Delicate” singer, 28, stunned at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards in a pink Versace gown with a thigh-high slit. She topped off her look with sky-high Casadei heels, Hueb earrings and rings by Fernando Jorge, Sara Weinstock Jewelry and Maxior.

The show marked the first awards show Swift’s attended in years. Inside the bash, she sat with Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello. Cabello is currently opening up for Swift on her Reputation tour and Mendes made a surprise appearance during L.A.’s show on Friday, May 18.
